Rausch
(world premiere)

Junges Schauspiel Düsseldorf / a coproduction with Take-off: Junger Tanz

Five characters are trapped in a glass labyrinth. Without uttering a word, they diligently go about their work, repeating the same tasks day in and day out. Suddenly, something occurs in the lives of these individuals that breaks the monotony and awakens hidden desires. Thus free from their routines, they discover a new world full of fantasy, temptation, danger, exhilaration and ecstasy. After all that, going back to their old lives becomes inconceivable.

With a keen sense for the absurd and an interest in the surreal, Belgian theatre-maker Gregory Caers and his ensemble imagine the kind of world that results when our lives are constantly dictated by strict rules, discipline and the pressure to perform. A world that poses a sharp contrast to the innate need of people both young and old to overcome barriers and seek community.

Selection committee statement excerpt:
“Exciting shifts between a minimalist performance style and grand theatrics, borne time and time again by humour and absurdity, create an astonishing work of dance theatre that leaves its adolescent audience buzzing with excitement in spite of adversity. For after such a rush of exhilaration, there’s no going back to their old lives.”

Productions by Belgian director Gregory Caers have gained a reputation near and far for their virtuoso use of a universal language that encompasses dance, pantomime and drama.
In the Düsseldorf world premiere “Rausch” (“Frenzy”), Caers succeeds in aptly depicting everyday people caught up in their routines – perfectly implemented by the performers – through stereotypical movement sequences and without a single spoken word. This gives rise to imagery in the minds of the audience, who are well acquainted with the tedium of the daily grind. The desire for freedom is almost palpable.
And deliverance comes in person: in the form of the dancer and choreographer Lito Anastasopoulou, whose brilliant dancing sensuously epitomises the moment of escape, the outburst of frenzy.

"Rausch" by Jungen Schauspiel Düsseldorf will not be part of the festival programme.

The team of Junges Schauspiel writes:
"In ‘Rausch’, five nameless characters move throughout a glass labyrinth as if on autopilot. Their world is determined by rules and constraints as well as by deliberate exaggerations and clichés – things from which they begin to break free in the course of the performance. Due to ongoing discussions at Junges Schauspiel / Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, we are currently in the process of preparing a revised version of our production. We sincerely regret that, for scheduling reasons, this will not yet be available at the WESTWIND festival."
